Trent's Tracks Through the Decades Part 13

Hello everyone and welcome back to Trent’s Tracks: Through the Decades.

Over the course of five weeks (October 24th – November 27th), I will be exploring some of the finest music from each of the last five decades (yes, that’s a whole week for each decade) with a brand new song being added to the list every single day. By the end of the five weeks, there will be 35 songs on the list for you to enjoy from throughout the last 46 years.

We are fast approaching the end of our second decade, with just TWO songs left before we have to leave the 1980s behind. However, both of these songs are worthy of being saved until the very end.

When synthpop duo Softcell were looking for a song to cover and put their own unique stamp on, they discovered this. It was a relatively unknown piece of northern soul music from 1965, recorded by Gloria Jones.

The duo covered it, only expecting minimal success for the track. Instead, it surpassed all expectations and became a global smash in 1981 and 82, reaching number one in several different countries around the world. Their very 1980s synth cover took this little known tune by Gloria Jones and made it a worldwide smash, creating one of the most iconic tracks that this decade would produce.

Good job, Softcell. I salute you, and applaud the brilliance of this song.

Everyone, you should know the name of this song by now. I give you Tainted Love.

Tainted Love

I would love to know what you guys think of this song. You can DM me on social media (links are in the table) or leave me a comment if you want to share your thoughts.

I will be putting the last 1980s TTD post up tomorrow night, so keep an eye out for that. Until then, keep positive, keep smiling, and above all else, keep believing!
