Over the course of five weeks (October 24 th – November 27 th ), I will be exploring some of the finest music from each of the last five decades (yes, that’s a whole week for each decade) with a brand new song being added to the list every single day. In my opinion, Scouting For Girls are highly underrated and deserve so much more appreciation than people give them. I don’t think they’ve released a single song that I don’t like, and they have come out with some incredible ones since they emerged about a decade ago. Among them are the likes of Heartbeat, This Aint A Love Song, and She’s So Lovely. However, out of all of the singles they have given us, this is hands down my favourite. For this song, we turn to a former member of *N’Sync who has gone on to have a massively successful solo career in music, in addition to acting in films such as The Social Network, In Time, and most recently, Trolls. This track comes from his debut album, Justified, and was produced by a pre-fame Timbaland, who makes an appearance in the video. This group have had huge success around the world over the years, and have grown to become one of the most well-known in the world today. They have had big hits such as Payphone, This Love, and Moves Like Jagger. Over the course of five weeks (October 24 th – November 27 th ), I will be exploring some of the finest music from each of the last five decades (yes, that’s a whole week for each decade) with a brand new song being added to the list every single day. A new week means a new decade, and this week it’s also time for us to head off into the new millennium! The first song of the week is from 2002, and one which I just remember as being EVERYWHERE that year. It brought together a well-known rapper with a former member of Destiny’s Child, the result of which was a track of pure gold. We have now come to the end of 1990s week, which means that we have just one track left. To see out this decade, I have chosen a song with one of the most memorable melodies ever, as well as one of the most famous videos. This is such an iconic track that I just had to put this on the list somewhere, and as it turns out, it will be the last one of the week and is a very fitting way to cap off this wonderful decade of music. This is the third time that Michael Jackson has made an appearance on this list, with us having already had Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, and Billie Jean in the 1970s and 1980s respectively. I spoke on both occasions about how his influence stretched across decades and how he had such a massive impact on the world of music across generations. I have always loved today’s song, because although it is slow and solemn, its message is one of hope. It is about the fact that going through bad times is normal, but that in the end everything will be fine – a principle I really believe in. I give you the breath-taking Everybody Hurts by REM.
