B.E.D.A 2018: Day Seven

Hello again everyone, and welcome back to BEDA 2018.

Our language: English is multicultural

This week, I want to use the knowledge I’ve acquired from my language studying over the last twelve years and share some information about the English language with you.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the two biggest English-speaking nations in the world, the UK and the USA, have changed dramatically in political terms. Brexit, Trump, and the lurch towards the right wing have all taken place over the last few years and have led to an increasing anti-immigrant, nationalistic rhetoric.

Well, I have some news for those people who use THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE to express their hatred for immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Guess what? The language you are speaking – English – is in fact a multicultural language. It is made up of bits of other languages from every single corner of the world. There are words and phrases from Africa, America, and the rest of Europe which have entered our language. We use them every day without even knowing it.

So, to everyone who expresses dislike and discrimination toward people because of their status as immigrants, I remind you that the language you speak is a composite of multiple cultures and is, therefore, an immigrant language.

Tomorrow, I’m going to be going into some of the other fascinating aspects of our wonderful mish-mash language, so if you’re interested, look out for tomorrow’s post.

Trying new things is always a good thing to do, in my opinion.

It can be a fulfilling way to feel like you’re achieving things all of the time. And these new things don’t have to be big things like travelling to a new city or finishing a huge project. They could be simply trying a new food, styling your hair in a different way, or going to somewhere small that you haven’t been to before (like a shop or a local park).

I think trying something new is a good idea and if you can do even one tiny thing each day that you haven’t done before, it can have a hugely positive impact on your life.

SONGS OF 2008

Now it’s time to see which two songs occupy the next two positions on the countdown of the best songs from 2008.

Today, I have two tracks from Ireland’s two most successful boybands.

At 48, it is Westlife, with Us Against the World, and Boyzone’s comeback track, Love You Anyway, is at number 47.
