End of an Era 2: Term is Here!

Hello everyone. It’s been about a month now since my last End of an Era post, and a lot has happened since then, so it’s time to give you all an update.

LAPTOP ISSUES

At the start of September, my laptop broke and had to go in for repair.

With just weeks to go before I was due to come back to university, this was one of the worst things that could’ve happened at that point. It was so frustrating because I had worked so hard trying to make sure that I was in control of everything, and suddenly the one thing I needed to keep on top of everything had broken, and I would be without it for 10 days!

Believe it or not, this story gets worse before it gets better. Imagine my relief at getting the message through saying that my computer had been repaired and was back in store, and then the pure happiness when I got it back, and was able to use it again. I began doing what I needed to do, catching up on what I hadn’t been able to do for a week and a half. Just THREE HOURS after I had picked it up, it went into standby mode and would not switch back on, which sent me into an absolute rage. How on Earth could it come back from being fixed and be broken AGAIN within just hours?

This is above all else the ONE year where I need to be organised and in control at the start of term, and I just felt at this point like the world was doing everything it could to undermine all of the effort I had put in to get myself organised.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this story. Due to it still being under warranty, I got it replaced for free the next day, and I am incredibly happy with the fact that I got through the mess that was those two weeks. I now have a brand new laptop (which has effectively cost me nothing) and am so much less stressed now I have this problem sorted out (which I managed to do just two days before my return to uni!).

MOVING IN

Just days after finally getting all of my computer issues sorted, it was time to head back to university, and move into what is the last flat that I will live in as a student.

I have to say that out of all of the flats I have had during my time at university, this one is the nicest, and the one where I feel the most comfortable. On top of how nice it is, all of the people I am living with have turned out to be really nice people, which makes me feel more at ease whilst I’m here as well.

So, overall, my accommodation is one aspect of my life I feel content about.

DOCTOR WHO SOCIETY

As said in my last EoaE post, I have been elected as president of my university’s Doctor Who society this year, a role I am so excited to be taking up. However, there is a lot of work at this stage trying to ensure that the year kicks off in style.

The first major thing has been putting together my welcome quiz, which I have had to do THREE times because of the issues with my computer, and that’s before the stress of setting a date, time and place for the meeting as well. And, on top of that, I still have to sort food, drink and a bunch of other things too, not to mention promoting the event and the society itself to people, which I will come onto in a second. This is meeting number ONE and already this is so stressful.

This Sunday, 25th September, was Freshers’ Fair, an event to promote and increase the membership of societies. I also had to sort this out, sourcing posters and other resources for our table. In the end, it did look great, but it took a lot of hard work getting there.

These first few weeks in the job have been incredibly tough, but I know that it will be worth it when things work themselves out, and that later on things will begin to sort themselves out, and become easier as time goes on.

TIMETABLE

Of course, starting a new term means a brand new timetable, with new modules and teachers to deal with.

Looking at it, I am very upset by the state of my Friday this term, which starts early and ends late. This means that my weeks will have to end with this hard slog of a day, which I am absolutely not looking forward to. This MIGHT, and I do mean MIGHT, affect my Trent’s Tracks schedule, but I will let you know if anything does change in regard to when I put up an of my posts on this page.

However, there are two major positives on my timetable. Monday and Thursday are DAYS OFF. As a final year student, I am very VERY grateful to be given the privilege of days where there aren’t any classes, something I know many others would give anything to have during this most important (and difficult) of years.

Overall, I don’t feel like I am too stressed out at this stage, largely thanks to having already dealt with most issues, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that at the time of writing, term hasn’t started yet. I don’t know, but whilst I feel good and positive about things, I am not going to take it for granted.

Are you a student whose term is about to start in the coming weeks? Have you had similar issues to the ones I’ve described above? You can get in touch via my social media links in the table below, or by leaving a comment at the end of this post. My next post will be a Trent’s Tracks, due to go up this Friday, so keep an eye out for that. Until then though, keep active, keep smiling, and above all else, keep believing!
