World Book Day!

Hello again everyone! Today I’m bringing you the first in my special book month posts. Enjoy!

As you may or may not be aware, today is World Book Day, a global event celebrating the wide variety of wonderful books and stories that we are privileged to have in this world.

From what I’ve seen and experienced of the campaign, it generally aims to encourage more children to read books, with many schools allowing pupils to dress up as their favourite characters from their favourite books. As a lover of reading, I am 100% behind the idea of a worldwide celebration of books, and of encouraging more people, be they children or adults, to sit down and read. In this age of smartphones, tablets, and social media, it is becoming increasingly harder to engage people, particularly young people, with the idea of reading. Therefore, I believe that this is a fantastic idea to show that there is more to the world than digital technology, and that reading can still be such a remarkable, and beautiful thing.

So, today, I encourage you, whoever and wherever you are in the world, to start reading. There are so many options out there, and I am listing just a few below:

  • Buying a book – the most obvious option, and they are easy to find in bookshops, second-hand shops and even supermarkets, all at reasonable prices.
  • Borrowing a book – this can be done either by going to a library and loaning one, or possibly by asking a friend if they can lend/recommend something
  • Newspapers/magazines – again, these seem to be everywhere and you have the option to purchase them or borrow them. Often you can find a rack of newspapers in a library or a café if you wish to sit down and read them with a coffee

And of course, these can be sub-divided into all sorts of categories based on personal taste; fiction or non-fiction, short stories or full-length novels, formal news articles or gossip columns, poetry or song lyrics, the possibilities are seemingly endless.

Even though I have already spoken about how the digital age affects people’s engagement with reading, it can also encourage it. For example, the invention of the e-book has enhanced the way we read our favourite books without the need for carrying around the weight of the printed format (although in my opinion nothing can compare to the feel and smell of a real paperback book). And of course, you have just read a whole blogpost!

Just to reiterate, I want you to read something today, no matter what it is. This day is intended to be a celebration of literature and of the power and influence that reading has, and I want as many of you as possible to explore and experience this magic today.

That’s it for today. As usual, comments and social media for thoughts on this post are below and I’ll see you in my next post. Until then, keep READING, keep smiling, and above all else, keep believing!
