Heaven Sent Review

Welcome to the review of Episode 11: Heaven Sent. As is ALWAYS the case with these reviews, I am going to warn you that there WILL be spoilers in this post, so don’t read on unless you have seen the episode. This week saw a first for Doctor Who – an episode with only one main voiced character. It was a fantastically unique way to tell a story and gave Capaldi a chance to show his ability as an actor, something which he did wonderfully. I have to give credit to him for being able to pull off such a challenge and to nonetheless deliver a stunning and emotionally-charged performance. Without any other actors or real characters to interact with and bounce off, it showcased Peter Capaldi’s range of acting talents, with displays of fear and brilliance, alongside the grief of having just lost Clara. I highly rate him as an actor, and Heaven Sent proved me very much right to do so. As the series is nearly at its end (sob), the story arcs are becoming clearer. Finally, we now k...

Face the Raven review

I’m sure that you’ve seen the episode by now, but just in case you haven’t, don’t read on any further because this review DOES contain spoilers and I do not want to be responsible for ruining it for you. If you have watched it, enjoy! I feel as though there is only one thing to discuss from Face The Raven, and that is, of course, the death of Clara Oswald. So, before I offer my thoughts on her final episode, I thought I would pick my three favourite Clara episodes and explain why I have chosen them. 3 – Deep Breath (Series 8, Episode 1, 2014) This episode brought a real test for the character of Clara, because she had to deal with the newly regenerated Doctor, and how much he had changed. Much like Rose Tyler in The Christmas Invasion (2005), Clara found it hard to accept that her Doctor had “gone” and that he was a different man, and yet the same one she had always known. It was also a brilliant episode because it showed how the new Doctor and companion dynamic had c...

Life Updates 6

From now on, I’m not going to stick to the structure of previous life update posts and change things around a bit. Hopefully, this will be a better way of writing these posts. As far as placement year goes, I moved one step closer to the next stage this week. As is the case with so many of these things, there was a mountain of paperwork to get through before going. This week, all of that was at last completed and it means January and the chance to study in France are fast approaching. Time is passing so quickly! The reality of this part of my placement year has also just hit me, because this week I set my travel date. It is now official that on January 11 th 2016, I will be leaving the UK and heading into my study placement abroad. After setting this, everything feels real and after more than two years in the planning, this amazing adventure is now less than eight weeks away! What this does mean of course is that I am nearing the end of this term and what has been an ...

Sleep No More review

Welcome to my review of Series 9, Episode 9 of Doctor Who, titled Sleep No More. Remember not to read on if you haven’t yet seen the episode because there are spoilers and I wouldn’t want to be blamed for ruining it for you. You have been warned! For me, this episode had some good elements to it. I loved the concepts of the Sandmen and the unique way in which the story was told through character perspectives rather than external cameras. These delivered a very strong horror movie feel to the episode and has shown that the format of Doctor Who is flexible enough to be able to explore new ways of telling stories. It is a testament to the show’s diversity and longevity that every so often, a unique type of story can come along which hasn’t been done before and surprises us with how refreshing and terrifying it is. Abandoned space stations (or indeed anywhere that’s abandoned) always provide a terrifying backdrop to any Doctor Who storyline. This once again adds to the suspe...

Life Updates 5

Image
Here is the latest on what’s going on in my life, so enjoy! Placement Year Out of the 10 week duration of this part of my placement, 5 weeks have now passed. This means that already I’m halfway through it! Time is passing so quickly and before long, I’m going to have to face the inevitable reality of what comes next. For now, I am happy to continue developing key new workplace skills. As time progresses, I am gaining more confidence in interacting with both clients and colleagues. This week, I attended a number of meetings and had to engage with others in a new range of contexts. I am starting to realise that in the future, the key skills I am learning this term will be beneficial to me when I apply for jobs, be they part-time or graduate. As the term heads towards its conclusion, I hope to continue learning and practicing new skills as well as building my self-confidence and my CV as a result of what I have done over this term. Blog Last weekend, I finally man...

The Zygon Invasion and Inversion review

For this post, I will be reviewing the two-part Zygon story. If you haven’t seen them both yet, I recommend watching them before reading on as there will be spoilers in this review. There are quite a few things about these episodes I want to cover so let’s get started. Zygons When the Zygons were in the 50 th anniversary episode in 2013, I expected that we would see more of them in the episode than we did. It felt like such a poor decision made by Steven Moffat to bring back a classic Doctor Who villain without explaining more to modern viewers about what they were. These episodes definitely made up for that because they weren’t thrown in alongside so many other things like in “Day of The Doctor”. I absolutely love the Zygons for several reasons. One, I love seeing classic villains reintroduced in NuWho. Two, they are different to every other monster in the Whoniverse because they genuinely terrify me. There aren’t a lot of things in the world which scare me, but I do...

The Woman Who Lived review

As it is very late, I’m going to make this post a short one. I loved this episode. Maisie Williams once again shone and delivered an emotional rollercoaster ride. We got to see how the character of Ashildr, through her long life, had lost much of her humanity and turned into Lady Me. The consequences of her immortality are that she has very little human emotion or connection remaining having suffered a lot over the centuries that she has lived. The episodes where we get less focus on an aliens are probably my favourites, because they look into how the Doctor and his actions impact directly on humans and this for me is a fantastic way to explore the way the Doctor affects humanity. Overall, this episode was a powerful emotional journey through the human consequences of immortality, played so brilliantly by Maisie Williams. She was absolutely flawless across both halves of this two-parter and Ashildr/Lady Me is one of my favourite characters from this series. The Woman Who Lived...

Life Updates 4

Hello! I’m saying that because it has been SO LONG since I last posted. I have been massively busy over the last few weeks. As well as that, I’ve had writer’s block every time I’ve tried to write a post for you guys and this has been so frustrating because I have really wanted to put something up and haven’t been able to. Right now, there are also things going on in my life which I would like to remain personal but these have affected me so much and have also impacted my ability and motivation to post. I hope you understand that things haven’t been easy but there are more posts on the way now so please do stick with me. Placement Year Time is passing so quickly! Since my last update, two more weeks of this term have passed and now I’m over halfway through this part of my placement year! Now I’ve got to know my colleagues, I’m feeling much more comfortable and settled than ever and have really found my place within my working environment. I am beginning to gain skills in terms ...
